staying grounded & living slow in your 20's: In Bloom Session 6 with Bec Gilbert
Bec Gilbert is a beautiful, gentle & grounded yoga teacher. She is truly older & wiser than her age number. I first started following Bec on Instagram when I was searching for yogi’s & yoga studios, dreaming up a beachy future on the Coffs Coast.
Some could definitely call me a stalker, as when she walked into my work a couple weeks after I had moved from Melbourne I came up to her & said “are you Bec Gilbert the yogi?” That very afternoon Bec ended up being our new housemate & I was so dumbfounded all over again at the universe & the connectedness of it all.
Our mutual love in the simple things & in a simple yoga practice makes me adore her even more. As housemates (& fellow teachers at a local yoga studio) we only see each other in passing, but when we do cross paths we almost always have a deep belly giggle about something silly & weird. I love it.
During the day Bec works at a local cafe & in the evening she teaches yoga. She is so incredibly clear & focused on what she wants - she went to India on her own to train as a yoga teacher at just 19 knowing in her heart it was for her - & yet so restful when it’s time to rest.
This shoot was so fun & of coarse full of giggles. Bec kept reminding me she didn’t know what to do, but in the next moment it was as if she had been in front of a camera her whole life - effortless! I hope you enjoy this interview & shoot as much as I do - especially with the doggos making an appearance as Bec is a fellow doggo lover!
We chose to shoot with yoga mats + props & then out in the long grass simply out the back of our home where bec could run silly & free. & I just love the outcome!
you can follow Bec on Instagram at @beccgilbert for all her adorable stories filled with her adventures with Stump, her doggo best friend.
1. What did you want to be when you grew up?
I always dreamt of being a vet. I grew up on a farm and have always adored animals.
2. 3 words to describe your now-season?
Challenging, growth, love.
3. What is it that inspires your creations/practice/ or just inspires you generally?
When it comes to teaching yoga I am inspired by the lovely humans that I interact with along the way. For me, yoga changed my life and has made me the gentle human I am today and I feel privileged to encourage people through their own self growth.
4. 5 words to describe YOU?
Stubborn, introverted, gentle
5. What most people wouldn’t really know about you?
I have a very good long term memory, I can recall memories from when I was 3 years old. I can also remember up to 5 dreams a night.
6. What lights you up?
Nature. You can usually find me deep into a forest or deep in the ocean, being surrounded by nature and observing mother nature work her magic lights up my soul.
Do you manage a day-job-hustle? How do you find that balance?
I do, but it doesn’t take much to keep me humble so balance comes easier for me.
7. Where are you being called towards in future?
Currently I am at stand still. I feel that being in your 20’s comes with a lot of pressure to become someone and make something of yourself, but I’m taking time to nurture and love myself.
8. Anything you are working on within yourself right now?
Everything that I am currently working on is within myself. I am persistently learning new things about my mind, body and soul and from that comes relentless growth.
9. What is most coming forward / blooming within you currently?
The connection with my inner child self. The more I feed my soul, the more I feel like a kid on Christmas, that’s how I know that I’m doing what I love.
10. A little piece of advice for anyone following the non-linear whispers of their heart in this linear world?
Follow your intuition, don’t set limits or boundaries for yourself.
As my good friend says, get busy living or get busy dying.
